Add Newsela as a Trusted App in Google Workspace

If your school/district uses Google Workspace for Education accounts in order to access Newsela, then your Google Workspace admin must mark Newsela as a trusted application in Google Workspace.

You can review Google’s guidance on how to confirm third party app settings here. And to make it easy, here's a quick summary of how Google Workspace admins add Newsela as a trusted app:

  1. Log in to your Google Workspace for Education admin account.

  2. Navigate to the Admin console and click on "Security."

  3. From the Security menu, select "API Controls."

  4. Under "Third-party apps," click on "Manage third-party access."

  5. Click on the "+ Trusted" button and search for "Newsela."

  6. Select Newsela from the search results and click "Add."

That's it! You've successfully listed Newsela as a trusted app, ensuring uninterrupted access for all our Google Workspace for Education users.

FAQs

How do I make sure my students don’t lose access to Newsela as a result of this change?

Your Google Workspace admin must approve Newsela as a trusted application for third party application access to Google Workspace prior to the October 23, 2023 deadline. If you are the administrator for Google Workspace for Education, follow the instructions included above. If you are a teacher and you or your students have lost access to Newsela via Google, you can use other sign in methods (see below). We also recommend that you contact your school or district administrators to let them know that Newsela is critical to your instruction and should be added as a trusted app.

Who is most impacted by this change?

This change could directly impact both teachers’ and students’ ability to access Newsela. Students will be blocked from signing into third-party apps you haven't confirmed access settings for, so be sure to update your settings before the deadline.

I am a current Newsela customer, does this mean I am not impacted by this change?

No. Because this change is based on your Google Workspace administration settings, it will still require an administrator to approve the use of Newsela by ensuring third party application access. If you do not take action, students and teachers who use Newsela as part of a paid subscription will also be impacted.

How do I know if my District or School has Newsela identified as a trusted application?

There are a couple of ways that you can identify if Newsela is identified as a trusted application at your school/district. First, you can contact your Google Workspace administrator and ask if Newsela has a trusted status. Second, you can check to see if your students are able to successfully log in and access Newsela with their Google account after October 23, 2023 (Note: this will only be apparent after the October 23 deadline).

Are there alternative methods that I can use to log-in to Newsela?

Yes. Teachers and students have other ways they log-in to Newsela without Google credentials. You can learn more about the different ways to sign in below or contact Newsela Support for assistance.

Teachers and students at all schools can create Newsela accounts by going to newsela.com and clicking Join. If your priority is getting started right now, you can have teachers choose that option. Teachers should follow these steps to create their accounts with passwords.

However, teachers can only use one of these options at a time, so it is important to get started with the right one. If your school or district might be using one of the integration options above, we suggest asking your tech administrator. It may be possible to roster classes automatically for your teachers with one of these integration options, or this may have already been done for you at the district level. Some districts may have their own names for these integration options (such as “Our District Portal” instead of “Clever”).

Note: You can also contact us and we’ll let you know if we have a record of a preferred integration option for your school or district. If your school or district needs to change integrations or is considering multiple integrations, please let us know so we can help you find the best solution.
