Using Microsoft for Teachers

Teachers can sign in using Microsoft authentication.

Logging in

  • Go to newsela.com

  • Click Sign In.

  • Click Microsoft.

  • Enter your School/District Microsoft credentials.

When you log in for the first time…

  • Go to newsela.com

  • Click Join Now.

  • Newsela will ask you a few questions about your role and your school:

    • If you are a teacher or administrator please select I’m an Educator for full access to your subscription. (Selecting “I’m a student”’ will restrict access to features and content . If you are an educator who signed up as a student in error, please contact us.)

      Background section

  • Click Microsoft

  • Enter your School/District Microsoft credentials.

  • Make sure to use your school email address. This helps us connect you to the correct school.

  • If you’ve created a Newsela account in the past with an old email address, Newsela will give you the opportunity to merge accounts.

Once you respond to the questions, you’ll receive a verification email from Newsela. If you don’t receive a verification email, contact us.


Creating Classes

  • Go to Classes by clicking your name in the upper right-hand corner, clicking on Settings  and selecting the Classes tab.  

  • Click Create a Class.

  • Enter the class name, grade, and subject, then click Create Class.

Adding Students to Classes

  • Go to Students by clicking your name in the upper right-hand corner, clicking on Settings  and selecting the Students tab. 

  • Find the class you’d like to add students to and click Add Students

  • You’ll see a window with two options: 

    • Class Link: Copy the URL and share it with your students. Once students click on the URL, Newsela will guide them to sign in or create an account, and then take them to the class.

    • Class Code: Students sign in to newsela.com. They will click their name in the upper right-hand corner. Under the classes section of their account page, have students enter the Class Code and click "Add a Class."

  • You can also give your students these instructions: How to join your teacher’s class.   

To confirm that your students have joined your class, go to your Students. Under each class name, you’ll see a list of students who have joined your class.
