Teachers can assign individual articles or groups of articles (Text Sets). Students see these assignments on their Newsela homepage (at newsela.com or on the Newsela mobile app) and teachers see student work in the Binder.

NOTE: As of July 2019, educators without a Newsela subscription are only be able to view news and current events articles. Any of the other 20+ genres of nonfiction requires a subscription. To learn more about how a Newsela subscription can fit into your classroom, school, or district, click here.

  1. Find an article you want to assign and click Create Assignment.
  2. This will take you to the assignment page, where you select the class (or classes) for the assignment. You will also see two optional steps: Adding instructions and adjusting the reading level your students will see.
  3. Click Assign Now.

^Assign Multiple Articles #omit-nav

  1. Find a Text Set you want to assign and click Create Assignment.
  2. This will take you to the assignment page, where you select the class (or classes) for the assignment. You will also see three optional steps: Adding instructions, adjusting the reading level your students will see, and removing articles.
  3. Click Assign Now.

Note: Want to assign a group of articles that are not already in a Text Set? Go to the Your Text Sets page and click Create New Text Set. Then follow the steps above to create an assignment from your Text Set.
