Searching for Articles by Grade Bands (Suggested for)

There are many ways to find articles suitable for range of ages on Newsela that's available at every students' reading level. Ultimately, you the teacher know your students best. Newsela has some suggestions to help guide your search for just the right article.

To filter content by student maturity, start by clicking on the magnifying glass icon that's at the top of the Newsela page. This will bring you to Newsela's Advanced Search page.

Text Level allows you to search by the reading levels available for Newsela articles, regardless of how well suited the content is for a given grade range.

Suggested For allows you to find articles best suited for given age ranges, categorized into grade bands. The following is a description of the kinds of articles each grade range will show:

  • Lower Elementary School: This filter will present articles best suited for grades 2-4, containing additional visuals, diagrams, and sections of text to aid in comprehension. These articles are specifically chosen for younger readers, and typically exclude articles that require extensive background knowledge. The reading levels of these articles range from grades 2-6. The highest reading level of any of these articles is grade 6.

  • Upper Elementary School: These articles include the above articles for Lower Elementary, but also contain articles with reading levels higher than grade 6. Some of these articles' reading levels go as high as grade 11 or 12. The subject matter of these articles, however, is ideal for students in younger grades.

  • Middle School: These articles include a wide range of topics, including current events and other types of nonfiction articles found in the Newsela Library. These may require some degree of background knowledge, but all are available at a range of reading levels between grades 2 and 12.

  • High School: This filter will present both the articles in the Middle School range, plus some additional stories either too tragic or too complex for younger students. These will likely require some degree of background knowledge, but all are available at a range of reading levels between grades 2 and 12.
