Analyzing the impact of an image

When students read an article, they should respond to the following guiding questions:

  • What message does the image at the beginning of the article express?
  • How does it enforce the perspective of the author?
  • What might be left out of the image?
  • What might an alternative image for this article look like if it was written from a different perspective?

When students finish the article and answer the questions, they can create a new image to accompany the article and explain its significance. This can take the form of a photo caption, written, or verbal explanation.

Students can use this graphic organizer to support them in answering the above guided questions.
