Gallery Walk Activity- A Look Back at Social Systems

Through a gallery walk students will discover more about the Mayan culture and what aspects influenced or relate to our social systems today.

Introduction/Essential Question        How can remains from the past teach us about social systems today?
Set-Up
  • Separate students into 6 groups. Pre-determine where each group will start.
  • Write each of the following questions on a separate sheet of paper:
    • Why did we know more about the upper class than the lower class?
    • What factors contribute to the difference in lifestyle between the classes?
    • What did we learn about the Mayan lower class?
    • What was learned about Mayan culture?
Student Work
  • At each poster, students will work with their groups to respond to the question. They should use the article as support.
  • After 3-5 minutes, have groups rotate to the next poster. Students should read and discuss the content of the previous group and add their own responses.
  • Repeat this process until all groups have visited each poster.
Reflection/Evaluation
  • Come together as a whole class and discuss the generated ideas on each of the posters.
  • Have students draw a conclusion based on the essential question: How can remains from the past teach us about social systems today?
