Activity:

  • While reading The Constitution, students will use Annotations to highlight 3 roles and responsibilities of each of the 3 Branches of US Government. Highlight evidence for Legislative in GREEN, Executive in RED, and Judicial in YELLOW. Then students will answer the Write prompt to reflect on how all three branches work together to support our government system.
    • Article I: Legislative Branch/ Congress
    • Article II: Executive Branch / President
    • Article III: Judicial Branch / Supreme Court
  • PRO Instructions:
    • While reading The Constitution, reply to the guided Annotations to reflect on the roles and responsibilities of the 3 Branches of Government. Highlight evidence for Legislative in GREEN, Executive in RED, and Judicial in YELLOW. From each article, highlight one section in BLUE that surprises you and explain your reasoning. After reading, take the Quiz and answer the Write prompt.
  • Write prompt:
    • The Constitution outlines the 3 branches of government. How do the articles of The Constitution establish a foundation for “checks and balances of power”? How do the branches of government work together to “form a more perfect Union”?

  • Focus on Article II - The Executive Branch
    • What are the main roles and responsibilities of the President of the United States?
    • Summarize: What is the process of determining the next President?
      • Reflect: Do you agree with this process?
  • Create Handout where students can fill in main details about each branch from their reading / annotations.
