What is Newsela’s Paired Texts, Paired Classrooms event?

In celebration of National Reading Month, Newsela’s Paired Texts, Paired Classrooms event brings our Newsela Community together like never before. Our goal is to provide a unique virtual opportunity for students to connect with a classroom of peers from another part of the country.

How does it work?

Educators participating in Newsela’s Paired Texts, Paired Classrooms event will complete and submit this form. We’ll pair educators with a partner classroom from another part of the country based on the responses you provide. An email will then be sent e-introducing the paired educators. Educators will be responsible for scheduling the virtual meeting to discuss the paired text’s topic and articles. Who can participate?

Newsela  Educators teaching in a classroom can participate in this program.

How long will Newsela’s Paired Texts, Paired Classrooms event last?

Newsela’s Paired Texts, Paired Classrooms event will take place throughout the month of March (National Reading Month). The last day to submit a completed form is March 25, 2016. Once you’re matched, it’s up to you to arrange the time and date of the virtual meeting with your paired partner classroom.

Is there a cost to participate?

No, there is no additional cost to participate. Eligible educators must have a Newsela subscription.

Do my students need to have a Newsela account?

Yes, your students need a Newsela account to participate. If your students do not already have an account, please follow these instructions to help them create one.

Can my class participate in an alternative way?

Yes. If you’d prefer to exchange letters or communicate in another way, complete and submit this form. We’ll pair you with another educator who also wants to participate in an alternative way.

As a Newsela  Educator, what do I need to do to participate in this program?

  1. Choose one of three paired texts for your students to read:
  2. Complete and submit this form.
  3. Once you receive a confirmation email with your paired partner classroom, coordinate a date and time for your class’ virtual meeting.

What do my students need to do to participate in the program?

  1. Read both articles in their assigned paired text.
  2. Think critically about the articles and topics using the provided discussion questions and Write prompts.
  3. Actively engage in the virtual discussion with the partnered classroom also attending.

What is the goal for my students participating in Newsela’s Paired Texts, Paired Classrooms event?

Newsela’s Paired Texts, Paired Classrooms event is an opportunity for students to reflect on important issues that affect our daily lives. We hope students draw conclusions on their own by reading, analyzing, and critically thinking about the paired text they read. During the virtual meeting, students are also encouraged to actively voice their opinions and pose questions to peers they may never get the chance to meet in person.
