Quick Start Guide for Students

Great news! Your teacher signed your class up for Newsela. To get started, follow the directions below.

Step 1. Register

To register for Newsela, you need a Class Link or Class Code from your teacher. If you have more than one class that uses Newsela, just pick one. You can add more classes later.

Register with a Class Link

  1. Type the class link into a web browser such as Chrome or Safari.
  2. Click It’s my first time here.
  3. Choose one of the following options for creating your Newsela account:
    Option 1: Sign up with Newsela.  
         a. Enter your first and last name, username, and a password.
         b. Click Get Started.
    Option 2: Sign up with Google.
         a. Click Sign up with Google.
         b. Log in to your Google account if you aren't already logged in.
         c. Click Allow on the Google authentication page.
  4. Click Start Reading on the welcome screen.

Register with a Class Code

  1. Go to www.newsela.com.
  2. Click SIGN UP.
  3. Choose I'm a Learner.
  4. Click Yes and enter the Class Code.
  5. Click Next.
  6. Choose one of the following options for creating your Newsela account:
    Option 1: Sign up with Newsela.
         a. Enter your first and last name, username, and a password.
         b. Click Get Started.
    Option 2: Sign up with Google.
         a. Click Sign up with Google.
         b. Log in to your Google account if you aren't already logged in.
         c. Click Allow on the Google authentication page.
  7. Click Start Reading on the welcome screen.

Step 2. Joining another class

If you have more than one class that uses Newsela, follow the directions below to join that class.

Joining with a Class Link

  1. Type the class link into a web browser such as Chrome or Safari.
  2. Enter your password and click Join. The new class will appear in your list of classes.

Joining with a Class Code

  1. Hover over your name on the Search and Navigation bar at the top and choose ACCOUNT from the drop-down menu.
  2. Under Classes, type the Class Code and click Add Class. The new class will appear in your list of classes.

Step 3. Reading assigned articles

When you first log in, you'll see two tabs on your Newsela student homepage: Your Assignments and Explore.

Your Assignments tab has the most recent articles assigned by your teacher. The Explore tab is where you go if you're looking for more articles to read on your own.

Your BINDER shows the list of all articles your teachers have assigned for you to read. You can read any article that interests you, not just the articles assigned by your teacher. Follow the directions below to read assigned articles.

  1. Click BINDER on the Search and Navigation bar at the top.
  2. All articles assigned to you are listed under Your Work.
  3. Click an article in the list to read.
  4. Use the Reading Level Bar on the right to change the language, reading level, use Write, or take a quiz.
