Martin Luther King Jr. Paired Texts

Our Content team has selected two articles that bring together a historic activist and a modern-day figure. By looking closely at the lives and accomplishments of each, students will see history come alive.

Paired Texts and Connecting Prompt

Nobel Peace Prize winners Malala Yousafzai and Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. are both famous for the way they used words to motivate people and make change. Describe how their lives and achievements are similar, and how they are different. Use evidence from both articles to support your answer.

Activity

  1. Edit the Write Prompt in the King article to say:
"Nobel Peace Prize winners Malala Yousafzai and Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. are both famous for the way they use words to motivate people and make change. Describe how their lives and achievements are similar and different. Use evidence from both articles to support your answer."
  2. Assign both articles and write specific instructions to students:
    • Ask students to: highlight words describing King’s life in yellow.
    • Ask students to highlight words describing King’s accomplishments in green and write why it is an important accomplishment in the margin.
    • Ask students students to highlight key words describing Yousafzai’s life in yellow.
    • Highlight key words describing Yousafzai’s accomplishment in green and why it is an important accomplishment in the margin.
NOTE: Once they have finished both articles, students should go back to the King article and complete the Write prompt. The details from both articles that they have highlighted in yellow and green will help support their response.
Tip: You can also include this in the instructions on the King or Yousafzai article.
  3. Score the student's’ written work and give them feedback by going to the Assignments tab of your Binder and expanding to view all student activity for the King article. Under the Response column, you can track their progress and click on a student’s name when it says For Review to score it.
