Why Annotate?

We've learned that, on average, students perform nearly one letter grade better when they annotate the text before they take the quiz or while they're taking the quiz. Read more about Annotations That Matter.

Adding an annotation

You can highlight sections of an article and add annotations in the margin of any article. When you add an annotation, only the student and teacher can see it.

  1. Select the text you want to highlight and the Annotator will appear in the margin.
  1. Choose a color to highlight the text.
  2. Type your annotation in the write something to your students field. Newsela will automatically save your annotation as you type.

Editing an annotation

You can edit an annotation at anytime.

  1. Navigate to the annotation you want to edit.
  2. Click the highlighted text or the annotation.
  3. Edit the text in the Annotator. Newsela will automatically save your changes.

Deleting an annotation

You can only delete your own annotations.

  1. Navigate to the annotation you want to edit.
  2. Click the highlighted text or the annotation.
  3. In the Annotator, click the X.

Sharing an annotation

Tip: If you're a Newsela  educator, you can share your annotations with students, making them visible to everyone in the class. By default, annotations are private so you must use the share feature to make the annotations visible to your students.

  1. Navigate to the annotation you want to share.
  2. Click the highlighted text or the annotation.
  3. Click SHARE in the Annotator.

Unsharing an annotation

  1. Navigate to the annotation you want to unshare.
  2. Click the highlighted text or the annotation.
  3. Click UNSHARE in the Annotator.
NOTE: If a teacher unshares an annotation that a student has commented on, the annotation and comment are saved in both the teacher's account and the student's account. All other students will be unable to view the annotation once it has been unshared.
