It Costs What!? The impact of gas prices on the cost of running a bus.
It costs what? In this lesson students will apply their understanding of unit rate to discuss the impact of gas prices on the cost of running a school bus. Students will use the content from the Newsela article to create expressions to find the average gas mileage for a fleet of school buses. To view and edit the full lesson open the PDF or .docx below.
- Math: Ratios, Proportions, Profit
- Students will be able to…apply unit rate to identify the contributing cost to a school district and identify the different steps schools have taken.
- Students will identify…the impact of fluctuating gas prices on a school district.
- Students will use…expressions to find the average gas mileage for the fleet of school buses and average weekly or monthly cost.
Identify the constant of proportionality (unit rate) in tables, graphs, equations, diagrams, and verbal descriptions of proportional relationships.
Use variables to represent numbers and write expressions when solving a real-world or mathematical problem; understand that a variable can represent an unknown number, or, depending on the purpose at hand, any number in a specified set.
