For returning Newsela educators

Have you been asked to help your teachers explore the new features on Newsela? This guide shows you how to help your teachers transition out of one school year and get ready for the next.  

Explain Newsela PRO in 15 minutes

  1. Encourage teachers to edit their Settings Page by removing classes and by creating new classes. (5 minutes)
  2. Give teachers a brief overview of the  Features by walking them through: (5 minutes)
  • Editing a Write Prompt
  • Highlighting and Annotating a Text
  • How to track student progress in the Binder
  1. Encourage teachers to watch the 15-minute recording of Newsela PRO 201. They can pause the recording and practice what they are seeing. If they have questions they can join the Newsela Community by following us on Twitter @Newsela or joining our Facebook group. (5 minutes)

Explaining Newsela PRO in 30 minutes

  1. Encourage teachers to edit their Settings Page by removing classes and by creating new classes. (5 minutes)
  2. Play the 15-minute Newsela PRO 201 Recording or download the presentation slides and walk through the most helpful parts with your colleagues. (15 minutes)
  3. Have all teachers select a Text Set and customize it for their students by adding or deleting articles. Then, have teachers share their customized Text Set with one of their colleagues or post it to the entire Newsela Educator Community through Twitter or Facebook. (10 minutes)

Explain Newsela PRO in 60 minutes

  1. Encourage teachers to edit their Settings Page by removing classes and by creating new classes. (5 minutes)
  2. Play the 15-minute Newsela PRO 201 Recording or download the presentation slides and walk through the most helpful parts with your colleagues. (15 minutes)
  3. Have all teachers assign an article and write specific instructions to their students. This is a great time to set up an annotation strategy. (5 minutes).
  4. Edit a Write prompt and then use the annotations/highlighting feature to place some text based questions on the article. (15 minutes)
  5. Explore the Binder with your teachers. Encourage them to check out the three main views of the Binder (Assignments, Classes, and Student Progress). Show them how to filter the Binder based on what they would like to see and have them look for the article they just assigned. (10 minutes)
  6. Have all teachers select a Text Set and customize it for their students by adding or deleting articles. Then, have teachers share their customized Text Set with one of their colleagues or post it to the entire Newsela Educator Community through Twitter or Facebook. (10 minutes)
