Quick Start Guide for School Leaders

Thanks for joining Newsela. Our goal is to provide a way for teachers to create meaningful reading and writing assignments that will engage students and help them become stronger readers.

Step 1. Register

When a school signs up for Newsela , we create an account for the school leader and send a Welcome email with the school leader's username. The school leader can log in to Newsela to oversee faculty accounts and track their school’s progress.

Completing Registration

  1. Open the Welcome email from Newsela and click Accept Invite.
  2. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete your registration.
NOTE: If you also teach classes, refer to the Quick Start Guide for Teachers for information on how to set up and manage classes and assignments.

Step 2. Log in

  1. Go to www.newsela.com.
  2. Click SIGN IN on the Search and Navigation bar at the top.
  3. Enter the username and password from the Welcome email and click Sign In.

Step 3. Viewing registered faculty members

We suggest you begin by seeing which faculty have already registered for Newsela. Only the School Leader and Newsela Admins can view and edit faculty registration.

  1. Hover over your name on the Search and Navigation bar and choose FACULTY.
  2. A list of all faculty members associated with your school will display.

Step 4. Helping faculty members join Newsela

Faculty members must join your school's Newsela account to take advantage of all Newsela  features. They have two options for registration:

  • Create an account by searching for your school. NOTE: They must register with a valid school email address to join the school's Newsela account.
  • Invite faculty members using the Invite faculty link.

Inviting faculty members to join Newsela

  1. Hover over your name on the Search and Navigation bar and choose FACULTY.
  2. Copy the link under Invite faculty
  3. Create an email to each faculty member you wish to invite. In the body of the email:
    • Paste the Invite faculty link.
    • Instruct faculty members to click the link and follow the prompts to register for Newsela. NOTE: When a faculty member clicks the link, Newsela will automatically associate the new account with your school.
    • Remind faculty members to register with a valid school email address.
  4. Include the link to the Quick Start Guide for Teachers.
  5. Send the email. You can monitor who has registered by checking the faculty list. See Step 2. See which faculty have already registered.

Step 5. Assigning Newsela Admins

Newsela Admins have a Faculty tab that allows them to monitor and maintain the list of teachers registered, but they won't have access to the school binder. School leaders can grant admin settings to any registered teacher.

  1. Hover over your name in the Search and Navigation bar at the top and choose FACULTY.
  2. Use the Search faculty box or scroll down to locate the faculty member.
  3. Click the White Starunder the Admin column to make a faculty member a Newsela Admin.
NOTE: Newsela Admins have a Blue Starbeside their name.

Step 6. Using the School Binder

The School Binder shows an overview of performance for all students in your school. Only the school leader can access the School Binder.

  1. Hover over BINDER on the Search and Navigation bar at the top and choose SCHOOL PERFORMANCE.
  2. School performance data will display by grade level. You'll see the number and percentage of students at each level in this grade.

NOTE: Use the Reading Standard filter to view performance on a specific standard and the date range option to view performance for a specific grading period.

Level 1: Needs Help Students in the red category are recently performing well below proficient compared with all other Newsela students in the same grade.

Level 2: Nearly On Track Students in the yellow category are recently demonstrating partial proficiency compared with all other Newsela students in the same grade.

Level 3: On Track Students in the green category are recently demonstrating proficiency compared with all other Newsela students in the same grade.

Level 4: High Performing Students with a gold star are recently outperforming their same-grade peers.

  3. Click a grade to expand a list of teachers with classes registered for that grade level. This view shows the number and percentage of students the teacher has at each level.
  4. Click a name to view the teacher's Binder. This allows you to see performance data on individual students. See Using the Binder for more information.
