What is a rubric?

Rubrics are often used by teachers to evaluate their students’ performance on an assignment. These are particularly helpful when students complete writing assignments, as it sets expectations for the students on what is needed from them to earn points at each level. Students can view descriptions and examples of work at the various levels to see why they earned their score.

Newsela Write Rubric

We’ve reviewed a number of rubrics to help our teachers score their students’ writing. We really like how the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) Constructed Response Rubric aligns with our check-scoring system. Click here and scroll to page 16 to access this rubric.
