Dear Families,

We are excited to announce that this year, our school is using Newsela, a website that rewrites news articles and other informational texts at five different reading levels to make it possible for students of all ages to read them.

As a parent, guardian, or caregiver, you can be involved by asking your child about what they are reading on Newsela and even using it at home.  Newsela has a free iPhone and Android app that works offline, so your child will be able to read over five thousand articles at home on your phone or their own, even without an internet connection.

Here are three steps you can take to help your child read and learn with Newsela:

Download the free app to your phone or help your child download it to theirs.  You can also access Newsela at newsela.com.

Read at least one article a week with your child and ask them what other articles they have come across at school.  You can sign on with your child the same way they sign on at school.

Communicate with your child’s teacher as your child explores Newsela.  Teachers will be happy to know what articles a child enjoys talking about at home or chooses to show you on their phone.

We are using Newsela because it is important to us that students develop an informed worldview and expand their nonfiction knowledge.  By discussing Newsela with your child and their teachers, you can help them in the process of become better readers and global citizens.
