To give another reading option to students and instructors using Newsela during the summer at community colleges and Adult Basic Education programs, we've created a Newsela Summer Reading Club just for community college/ABE students. Students who join the Summer Reading Club will receive ten assigned articles at the start of the summer (students who join later in the summer will receive these articles upon joining). These articles will be handpicked from our archive of over 4000 articles to engage adult learners and provide practice on a variety of reading skills. We publish new articles during the summer as well, and a few of these new articles will also be assigned to students in the Summer Reading Club throughout the summer.
How students join the Summer Reading Club: All students (whether they already have Newsela accounts or not) can join the Summer Reading Club by going to this link: newsela.com/quickjoin/#/summer. (Students can also join by entering the Club Code "SUMMER" on their settings page.)
Instructors can view student progress in the Summer Reading Club by following these steps.
Instructors who want to assign articles themselves can also create their own summer classes on Newsela. Students log in and read during the summer with the same credentials they use during the school year, and students who do not yet have accounts can create them by going to Newsela.com and clicking "Join." Instructors at schools with Newsela PRO can view summer reading progress for all students in their Newsela classes in the PRO Binder.
