A typical lesson using Newsela looks like...

My students are seated in teams named after colleges. Each day they earn points and there is a winning team each week. Each week, I have the winning team look online and select the story they are most interested in. We then read the article together and discuss it. Then the students go to their own computers and reread the articles and discuss it with their team. This is a typical lesson. Unfortunately, we have limited access to computers. I would love to be able to do more with Newsela, but with tests and other constraints, our computer time is limited.

One thing she wish she knew during her first year teaching...

I wish that I knew that the most important part of teaching is the relationship and the compassion a teacher has with their students. I learned that, but not in my first year.

Favorite teaching memory...

There are soooo many it's tough to choose one. I guess I would have to say being able to move up with a 4th grade group to 5th grade. We were able to finish projects we were working on and extend everything even more. They are graduating this year and one of the students called me last year and said, "Mrs. Liss, I'm going to cry if you don't go to my graduation!" You can bet that I will be there. A few of them came to my current school during Thanksgiving break to help us paint a mural.

Her favorite thing to do outside of school...

Is there life outside of school? :)

I love to travel. My husband and I had a 50 state challenge for us to go to every state together. We completed our challenge in August, 2016. I'm almost finished writing a book about it right now. Spending time with my family, writing, visiting friends, my life is very full and blessed.
