Program 2: Text Sets for Summer Book Selection

Students will read articles in the “Why Do I Read?” Text Set or the “Authors” Text Set before selecting their summer reading books. Articles in these Text Sets will help students develop identities as readers and select books purposefully.

How to Use Program 2: Text Sets for Summer Book Selection

  1. Make sure that all students have Newsela accounts. Students who do not yet have Newsela accounts can register by going to Newsela.com and clicking “Join” (students under 13 will need the assistance of a parent or teacher).
  2. Share the “Why Do I Read?” Text Set (newsela.com/text-sets/195217/why-read) OR the “Authors” Text Set (newsela.com/text-sets/194900/authors) with students. Ask students to read at least 3 articles in the Text Set before selecting their summer reading books.
  3. To share this information with students and parents, add this explanation to your summer reading letter or information page (modify as needed):

For summer reading, our school is using Newsela.com, an online reading platform with high-interest nonfiction articles at multiple reading levels. Newsela can be accessed on an internet browser or by downloading the Newsela app from iTunes or from the Google Play store (if students have limited internet access, they can read offline with those apps). Students who do not already have Newsela accounts can sign up by going to Newsela.com and clicking “Join” (students under 13 will need the assistance of a parent or teacher).

Students should read at least three articles in this Text Set at the beginning of the summer, before selecting their summer reading book(s): “Why Do I Read?” Text Set OR “Authors” Text Set
