Summer slide learning losses add up, and Newsela is dedicated to helping students keep their reading skills sharp all summer long.
In addition to having summer access for all students and educators, Newsela PRO schools can select one of these customizable Newsela summer reading programs. Your school’s Newsela Educator Specialist will be available all summer to oversee the program and provide any requested modifications. If you are a PRO administrator or teacher and would like to select a program for your district, school, or classroom, please reach out to us at email@example.com with the subject line “PRO Summer Reading.”
The pages linked below provide instructions for easily implementing any Newsela summer program either independently or with the assistance of your Newsela Educator Specialist.
Program 1: Text Sets for Summer Reading
Newsela will create Newsela Text Sets with nonfiction articles aligned to your school’s summer reading assignments for every grade.
Program 2: Text Sets for Summer Book Selection
Students will read articles in the “Why Do I Read?” Text Set or the “Authors” Text Set before selecting their summer reading books. Articles in these Text Sets will help students develop identities as readers and select books purposefully.
Program 3: Newsela Summer Goals
Students will work towards goals to read a certain number of articles on Newsela during the summer (suggested goal: 3 articles per week).
Program 4: Digital Summer Reading Clubs
Students who join Newsela Summer Reading Clubs will receive ten assigned articles about the club topic. The twelve summer 2017 club topics include Youth Activism, Sports, History, and more.
Program 5: Newsela for Summer School
Summer school teachers enroll students in Newsela classes. Your school’s Educator Specialist can work with staff to integrate Newsela into summer school curriculum.
