This reading challenge is exclusive to schools in San Francisco and Alameda Counties, California.
This 6-week reading challenge will encourage students to read and take quizzes from the A Mile In Our Shoes Text Sets, which share some of the experiences, challenges, and accomplishments of a wide range of communities in America and abroad. Pick and choose the articles and Text Sets that will be most meaningful for your students, or let them choose themselves. All quizzes taken during the contest period will be counted, and the School in San Francisco or Alameda County with the highest score (see “Scoring” section), will win Golden State Warriors tickets and Warriors swag!*

How Do I Participate?
How can my students earn points?
Earning points is easy. Here's how:
- Have your students sign up for Newsela and add them to your class.
- Once your students have signed up, they can start earning points by taking quizzes and getting correct answers on any Newsela articles.
- Students will earn double points for articles in any “A Mile In Our Shoes” Text Set.
Will my students need to read all articles in “A Mile In Our Shoes” to earn double points?
No students does not need to read every article to earn double points - each article in the Text Set will be worth 2x points. We do encourage students to read all the articles to better empathize with each particular group.
How can I encourage my students to read more?
We encourage you to start by assigning articles (for help see instructions here). Incorporating relevant Newsela articles into your curriculum will also help your students earn points.
The school with the most points at the end of the challenge will win:
- 20 tickets to a Golden State Warriors game of the school’s choice
- A Golden State Warriors swag kit

- Students will earn 1 point for each quiz taken on Newsela
- Students will also earn 1 additional point for each correct quiz answer
- Students will receive 2 points for taking a quiz from any of the articles in the A Mile In Our Shoes Text Sets and for every correct answer in this text set

The Newsela Golden State Warriors Challenge (the “Challenge”) is sponsored by Newsela, Inc., having an address of 475 Tenth Ave, New York, NY 10019 (“Sponsor”) with Prizes (defined below) provided by The Golden State Warriors (“Prize Provider”) and Sponsor.
Subject to these Official Rules, the Challenge is open only to elementary, middle schools and high schools located within the following California counties: Alameda County and San Francisco County (“Bay Area Counties”). All students attending schools located in Bay Area Counties (“Participating Schools”) who are Newsela users may participate (each a “Participating Student”) to help their Participating School win the Prizes set forth below. [Employees of Sponsor, Prize Provider, and their respective parents, affiliates, subsidiaries, and advertising and promotion agencies and any other entity involved in the development or administration of this Challenge, and their immediate family members or household members are not eligible to participate in or win the Challenge.] THE CHALLENGE IS VOID WHERE PROHIBITED OR RESTRICTED BY LAW OR WHERE BONDING, REGISTRATION, OR OTHER REQUIREMENTS WOULD BE REQUIRED BUT HAVE NOT BEEN MET, OR WHERE THE METHODS OF ENTRY SET FORTH BELOW WOULD BE DEEMED CONSIDERATION. ALL APPLICABLE FEDERAL, STATE AND LOCAL LAWS APPLY.
The Challenge begins at 12:00 am EST February 21, 2017 and ends at 12:00 pm EST March 29, 2017 (“Entry Period”).
HOW TO ENTER
No purchase or payment is necessary to participate in the Challenge. During the Entry Period, students can earn points (“Points”) for their Participating School by taking Newsela quizzes on Newsela’s website or mobile services (the “Newsela Services”). Participating Students will earn 1 Point for each quiz taken on the Newsela Services. Participating students will also earn 1 additional Point for each correct quiz answer on the Newsela Services. Participating students will earn double (2 points) for each quiz and correct answer for articles in the “A Mile In Our Shoes” Text Set.
The Participating School with the highest Golden State Warriors Challenge Score (defined below) at the end of the Challenge will win the Prizes (defined below).
Golden State Warriors Challenge Score = total Points earned by Participating Students at Participating Schools during the Entry Period.
Participating Schools shall not allow, encourage, or permit participation by students unless the Participating School has (i) obtained all necessary consent from such student’s parent and/or legal guardian for use of Newsela’s services, and (ii) obtained all necessary consent and permissions necessary to comply with all provisions of these Official Rules.
Sponsor expressly reserves the right to disqualify any entries or participation that it believes in good faith are generated by automated means or scripts, in violation of these Official Rules or otherwise results from any unsportsmanlike or disruptive conduct, and all such associated entries, including all Points accumulated as a result of such conduct (as determined by Sponsor in its sole discretion) shall be void.

The winning Participating School will receive:
- Twenty (20) tickets to a Golden State Warriors home game
- A swag kit
Decisions of the Sponsor are final and binding with respect to all matters related to the Challenge. In no event shall the Sponsor or Prize Provider be obligated to award any prizes other than the Prizes specified in these Official Rules. The Prizes are non-transferable and no substitutions (including, without limitation, for cash) are permitted, except that Sponsor and Prize Provider reserve the right to substitute a prize of equal or greater monetary (retail) value for any Prize, or any portion thereof, if such Prize, or any portion thereof, should become unavailable for any reason. The winning Participating School shall be responsible and liable for all federal, state and local taxes on the value of the Prizes, and any related shipping and handling charges. To receive a complete list of winning Participating Schools or a copy of the Official Rules, within six (6) months after the end of the Entry Period, send a self-addressed stamped envelope to: Newsela Golden State Warriors Challenge Winner’s List, 475 Tenth Avenue, New York, NY 10019.
Sponsor will identify the Participating School that achieved the highest total Golden State Warriors Challenge Score on 3/29/2017.
The Challenge will be conducted under the supervision of the Sponsor. The decisions of the Sponsor are final and binding in all matters relating to this Challenge. The winning Participating School will be notified on or around 3/31/2017 by email; provided, however, that Sponsor reserves the right to determine an alternate method of notification. The winning Participating School must claim their Prize within forty-eight (48) hours after the date of notification of such Prize by responding to the Prize notification. A Challenge winner's failure to respond to the Prize notification within the specified forty-eight (48) hours will be considered such Challenge winner's forfeiture of the Prize and an alternate winning Participating School may be identified based on the next highest Golden State Warriors Challenge Score. If an entrant is found to be ineligible, an alternate winning Participating School may also be selected from the next highest Golden State Warriors Challenge Score.
GENERAL CONDITIONS AND RELEASES:
By entering the Challenge or accepting a Prize, Participating Schools agree to conform to all federal, state and local laws and regulations. When applicable, the winning Participating School may be required to execute and return (and winning may be conditioned upon the winner executing and returning) to Sponsor, within five (5) business days to be eligible for the Prize[GDSVF&H6] , an Affidavit of Eligibility and a Liability and/or Publicity Release provided by Sponsor to be eligible for the Prize, or an alternate winner may be selected. The winning Participating School may be required in Sponsor’s sole discretion to complete relevant tax forms as a condition to the delivery of the applicable prize.
Unless prohibited by applicable law, entry into the Challenge and/or acceptance of a Prize constitutes permission to use photographs, images, voices, and other identifying information concerning the Participating School’s participation in the Challenge in any and all media and manner Sponsor deems appropriate (including for testimonials, publicity, and other promotional purposes and for the purpose of placing the winning Participating School’s name on a winners list or on a chart showing Participating School performance during the Challenge), in perpetuity and without any compensation or any review or approval rights, notifications, or permissions. Participating Schools represent and warrant that they have secured any and all consents and permissions necessary to enable the school to enter into the Challenge and comply with all the requirements of these Official Rules, including the foregoing publicity release.
An entrant or winning Participating School may be disqualified from the Challenge if it fails to comply with each provision of these Official Rules, as determined in the sole discretion of the Sponsor. Participation in the Challenge is at entrant’s own risk. Sponsor shall not be liable for: (1) failed, returned or misdirected notifications based on inaccurate information provided by the winning Participating School in connection with an entry; (2) entries and responses to winning Participating School notifications which are lost, late, incomplete, illegible, unintelligible, postage-due, misdirected, damaged or otherwise not received by the intended recipient in whole or in part or for computer or technical error of any kind; (3) any electronic miscommunications or failures, technical hardware or software failures of any kind, lost or unavailable network connections, or failed incomplete, garbled or delayed computer transmissions which may limit an entrant's ability to participate in the Challenge; (4) any technical malfunctions of the telephone network, computer online system, computer equipment, software, program malfunctions or other failures, delayed computer transactions or network connections that are human, mechanical or technical in nature, or any combination thereof, including any injury or damage to entrant's or any other person's computer or mobile device related to or resulting from downloading any of Sponsor’s products or services or otherwise in connection with this Challenge; or (5) any warranty with respect to any Prize or any component thereof. THE PRIZES ARE AWARDED “AS IS” AND SPONSOR DOES NOT MAKE ANY, AND HEREBY DISCLAIMS ANY AND ALL, REPRESENTATIONS OR WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND REGARDING THE PRIZES.
NOTWITHSTANDING ANYTHING ELSE HEREIN OR OTHERWISE, SPONSOR, PRIZE PROVIDER AND/OR THEIR RESPECTIVE VENDORS OR SUPPLIERS SHALL NOT BE LIABLE OR OBLIGATED WITH RESPECT TO ANY SUBJECT MATTER OF THIS AGREEMENT OR UNDER CONTRACT, NEGLIGENCE, STRICT LIABILITY OR OTHER LEGAL OR EQUITABLE THEORY FOR (A) ANY SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR EXEMPLARY DAMAGES (INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, LOSS OF REVENUE, GOODWILL, OR ANTICIPATED PROFITS), (B) DATA LOSS OR COST OF PROCUREMENT OF SUBSTITUTE GOODS OR SERVICES, AND/OR (C) ANY MATTER BEYOND SUCH PARTIES’ REASONABLE CONTROL.
By entering the Challenge, each Participating School agrees to and hereby does release and hold harmless Sponsor, Prize Provider, and each of their respective parents, subsidiaries and affiliated entities, directors, officers, employees, attorneys, agents, and representatives (the “Released Parties”) from any damage, injury, death, loss, claim, action, demand, or other liability (collectively, “Claims”) that may arise from the Participating School’s acceptance, possession and/or use of any Prize or its participation in this Challenge. Participating Schools hereby waive California Civil Code Section 1542 or any other similar law that says in substance: “A general release does not extend to claims which the creditor does not know exist in his favor at the time of executing the release, which, if known by him must have materially affected his settlement with the debtor.” Any person attempting to defraud or in any way tamper with this Challenge may be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Sponsor reserves the right to modify these Official Rules in any way or at any time. Sponsor reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to cancel or suspend this Challenge should viruses, bugs or other causes beyond their control corrupt the administration, security or proper operation of the Challenge. In the event of cancellation or suspension, Sponsor shall promptly post a notice on Sponsor’s website to such effect. This Challenge shall be governed by New York law, without regard to conflicts of laws provisions. By participating in this Challenge, the winning Participating School agrees that any dispute or litigation arising from or relating to this Challenge shall be determined by binding arbitration only in New York, NY, by and under the Streamlined Arbitration Rules and Procedures of JAMS, and judgment on the award rendered by the arbitrator(s) may be entered in any court having jurisdiction thereof. Notwithstanding the foregoing, Sponsor may seek equitable relief in any court of competent jurisdiction. If any provision of these Official Rules is held to be illegal or unenforceable, such provision shall be limited or eliminated to the minimum extent necessary so that these Official Rules otherwise remain in full force and effect and enforceable.
